100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1964
💥22 You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’
The Righteous Brothers
The
Righteous Brothers was a duo consisting of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. When
the pair supported The Ronettes, Phil Spector was impressed. He signed The Righteous
Brothers to his label. Spector wanted a special song to realize the potential
he saw in the duo. He approached Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil to create such a
song. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” drew inspiration from The Four Tops’
hit “Baby I Need Your Loving”. When the new song was presented to Medley, he thought
it would not suit him and Hatfield. The writers slowed the song down. In the studio,
the male vocals were energized by Spector’s trademark Wall Of Sound. It had
worked effectively on his girl group classics and now it was raising blue-eyed
soul to new heights. After around 40 takes, the finished product clocked in at just
under 4 minutes. Radio wanted songs that ran for about a minute less in order to fit in more advertising. Spector
was asked to edit the track. He refused. Instead, he directed that the running
time placed on the label be 3:05. By the times DJs worked out the deception,
the single was on its way up the charts. It landed at the summit on both sides
of the Atlantic. At the time, this was the longest #1 to top the US Hot 100. The
single is the most played song on American radio with over 8 million plays.
