2022 was a year of controversy associated with FIFA’s World Cup held in Qatar; Russia illegally invaded the Ukraine; China imposed severe restrictions on its COVID-affected citizens and disasters impacted on numerous countries with landslides, floods, heatwaves and fires. We mourned the loss of icons such as Olivia Newton-John, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mikhail Gorbachev, Sidney Poitier, Angela Lansbury, Meat Loaf, Ronnie (Bennett) Spector, William Hurt, Christine McVie, James Caan, Irene Cara, Shane Warne, Loretta Lynn, Jean-Luc Godard, Shinzo Abe, Taylor Hawkins and Elizabeth II. The UK had 3 Prime Ministers. Economies around the world started heading towards a likely recession.

Music offered us solace and hope in the midst of all these tragedies and struggles. Here are the musical highlights of the year according to Caffè Lattè:

RUNNING UP THAT HILL – Kate Bush

This song’s inclusion in the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ saw the 1985 hit return to the charts in various countries. The track reached #1 in the UK (for 3 weeks) and Australia (for 9 non-consecutive weeks).

HURRICANES – Rina Sawayama

In 2022, the Japanese born singer now based in Britain released the ‘Hold The Girl’ album which revealed her growth and skill as a recording artist. This was a track from the album.

I’LL BE THERE – RPO with The Jackson 5
