100 ESSENTIAL LGBTQ+ ANTHEMS

Caffè Lattè presents the 100 anthems of the Rainbow community. Some get us up on our feet or will have us weep. They celebrate diversity and tell of the hardships endured by members of the community.

Y.M.C.A. Village People

One of the first pop songs to gain iconic status in the gay community. The disco classic spruiks the offerings of the Y.M.C.A. that can be enjoyed while you can “hang out with all the boys”.

I’M COMING OUT Diana Ross

Chic’s Nile Rodgers found himself in a public restroom surrounded by males dressed as Diana Ross when the idea for this anthem was conceived. In 1980, with Bernard Edwards, the pair created the perfect way to announce coming out.

IT’S RAINING MEN The Weather Girls

Martha Wash and Izora Armstead deliver the weather forecast. This was a downpour you wanted to get caught in, as men would drop down from the heavens.

BORN THIS WAY Lady Gaga

Many early LGBT+ anthems were sad songs dealing with violence, discrimination, hatred and unrequited love. In later years, there’s been a shift towards themes of self-esteem, acceptance and inclusion. 2011’s “Born This Way” is unapologetic and potent.

I AM WHAT I AM Gloria Gaynor

The finale from the 1983 Broadway musical “La Cage Aux Folles” became a gay anthem. Gloria Gaynor’s remake is a celebration of our differences and imperfections.
