100 ESSENTIAL LGBTQ+ ANTHEMS

Caffè Lattè presents the 100 anthems of the Rainbow community. Some get us up on our feet or will have us weep. They celebrate diversity and tell of the hardships endured by members of the community.

OVER THE RAINBOW Judy Garland

Young Judy Garland in the 1939 role that made her famous: Dorothy in ‘The Wizard Of Oz’. A coded way of identifying a gay person was as a ‘friend of Dorothy”. Garland was one of the first significant gay icons.

9

YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL) Sylvester

Sylvester took flamboyance and androgyny to another level. As gays found sanctuary on the dancefloor, he provided a soundtrack to the discotheque experience.

8

SMALLTOWN BOY Bronski Beat

The story of gay youths being kicked out of their homes was sadly too familiar in 1984. The song also deals with gaybashing. Its video was powerful for its time.

7

WE ARE FAMILY Sister Sledge

Countless causes have adopted this disco classic, but to the rainbow community, it remains an inclusive celebration of unity.

6

I WILL SURVIVE Gloria Gaynor

In 1978, Gloria Gaynor recorded this disco gem during a difficult period in her life. Since then, the song’s message has empowered numerous LGBT+ individuals.
