#746 BAKER STREET Gerry Rafferty
Scottish singer/ songwriter Gerry Rafferty first tasted success as a member of Stealer's Wheel with the memorable "Stuck in the Middle With You" in 1973. The group split 2 years later. Litigation prevented Rafferty from releasing new material, but, after 3 years, the performer was finally able to sign with new label United Artists.
In 1978, Rafferty released 'City to City'. The album contained the global hit "Baker Street". Written by Rafferty, the song stood out immediately because of the rhapsodic sax solo by Raphael Ravenscroft. The saxophonist went on to play on recordings by ABBA, Marvin Gaye, America, Pink Floyd and Kim Carnes. Rafferty co-produced the single with Hugh Murphy.
In Britain the disc reached #3. In the USA, it spent 6 weeks peaking at #2. It went to #1on the Australian chart. Rafferty continued recording. His final album came out in 2000. Rafferty died in 2011 of liver disease.
