C+C Music Factory was a project that revolved around 2 dance producers/ remixers, Robert Clivilles and David Cole (the C & C in the act's moniker). The 2 came together in 1989 and set about gathering musicians and vocalists to record the songs that became the group's debut album. 'Gonna Make You Sweat' was unleashed in the following year. One of its tracks, "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm...", was inspired by a phrase used by Arsenio Hall. The song was written by Clivilles with Freedom (aka Frederick) Williams. The latter raps the story of a protagonist realizing that his partner has been cheating on him with his friend. Released as the third single from their 1990 album, the disc made the top 10 in the US, UK and Australia. Both Cole and Clivilles helped produce the track.
