#826 ROCK THE BOAT The Hues Corporation
One of the first disco hits was "Rock the Boat" by The Hues Corporation. Its ascent to the top of the US Pop chart announced the arrival of one of the major music genres of the 1970s. The song was written by Wally Holmes who also formed the group. His original plan was to name his act The Children of Howard Hughes, but had to alter it to avoid legal issues. The song was added on the debut LP 'Freedom for the Stallion' in 1973 and had not been considered for release as a single. The album fared poorly, until dance clubs discovered the track. It was then picked up by radio and grew into a worldwide hit. Fleming Williams sang lead vocals but quit the group soon after. While John Florez is credited as the producer of the hit record, Tom Sellers' input was integral to its final sound and appeal.
