#784 BAMBOLEO The Gipsy Kings
The Gipsy Kings are steeped in tradition but managed to inject a fresh contemporary enthusiasm to their sound at the time of their international conquest with hits like "Bamboleo". The group formed in Arles, France in 1979, comprising 2 sons of respected flamenco performer Jose Reyes and their 3 cousins. Having adopted a gypsy-like lifestyle, the band's name eventually became The Gipsy Kings. Their first 2 albums fared poorly, but the group persisted. Redefining their sound with a modern approach, this new musical direction spawned new songs which soon caught on with audiences around the world.
"Bamboleo" was penned by lead singer Nicolas Reyes with guitarists Tonino Baliardo (1 of his cousins) and Jahloul "Chico" Bouchikhi. The song was recorded for the group's 1988 self-titled LP. The single was a Top 10 hit in Europe and peaked at #19 in Australia.
