Indecision marked the journey to the big screen for the title song for ‘Thunderball’. Shirley Bassey and Dionne Warwick recorded “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” for the opening credits. Ultimately, both songs were rejected. A new song was commissioned. This time, the film’s title was to feature prominently in the lyrics.
That task fell on John Barry and Don Black. The former composed the music while the latter created the lyrics. Tom Jones delivered a powerful vocal which built on Bassey’s stunning performance on the preceding Bond film ‘Goldfinger’.
“Thunderball” became a Top 10 hit in Canada. On the British chart, the single reached #35. In America, the disc peaked at #25. The film was a major success at the box office too.
