Bond theme songs had suffered a dip in quality and impact since 1995. Adele’s “Skyfall” re-invented the formula. Subsequent title songs have tried to build on what the singer established in 2012, but none have matched it as yet.
Daniel Craig’s third film starring as James Bond could not have asked for a more competent and current pop culture sensation. Adele’s vocal skill had already been lauded before she agreed to sing the theme.
“Skyfall” was written by the singer and her regular collaborator Paul Epworth. The latter also produced the track. In Britain, the single reached #2. The disc peaked at #8 in the U.S.A. It also made the Top 10 in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Israel.
History was made when “Skyfall” became the first Bond song to earn an Academy Award. It also collected a Golden Globe, a Grammy and the Brit Award for Best British Single.
The film paid tribute to renowned Bond composer John Barry who had passed away the previous year. His former home was used for the exterior of M’s house in the new movie.
