Bond film fans were introduced to one of the most unforgettable villains in the franchise: “Jaws”, portrayed by Richard Kiel when they watched ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. He would reprise the role in the next film: ‘Moonraker’.
Roger Moore was back as 007, this time with one of the most famous Bond women: Barbara Bach. The main title sequence featured 007 for the first time.
“Nobody Does It Better” was the hit song from ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. American singer / songwriter Carly Simon performed the theme. She was riding high after scoring hit songs such as “You’re So Vain”, “That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be” and “Mockingbird” (the latter recorded with her then husband James Taylor).
Marvin Hamlisch composed the music and Carole Bayer Sager wrote the lyrics for “Nobody Does It Better”. Richard Perry produced the ballad. It was nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy.
The track was also nominated for a Best Original Song Academy Award and Golden Globe. It lost to “You Light Up My Life” from the film of the same name.
As well as peaking at #2 on the US Hot 100 for 3 weeks, the single was a Top 10 smash in Britain, Canada, Australia and various European territories.
