Sam Smith served up another ballad in a tradition that was threatening to sound formulaic. At least “Writing’s On The Wall” offered a male vocal to set it apart from recent Bond songs.

The British singer /songwriter co-wrote the song with Jimmy Napes. Production of the theme was handled by the latter with Steve Fitzmaurice and Disclosure.

“Writing’s On The Wall” was the first Bond song to top the British chart. The single also reached the Top 10 in European nations such as Belgium, France, Finland, Italy and Switzerland.

Despite its poor performance in America and other countries, this became the second consecutive Bond track to win both an Academy Award and Golden Globe in the Best Original Song category.
