TOP 1200 CHOICE TRACKS
#1163 KING HEROIN James Brown
While known for his funky workouts, the Godfather of Soul did cut some beautiful ballads (including "It's a Man's Man's World") and thought-provoking tracks such as this precautionary anti-drug song. Starting life as a poem written by Manny Rosen. Brown set the words to music with his arranger David Matthews and manager Charles Bobbit. "King Heroin" was recorded in 1972 and included on his 'There It Is' album later that year. The lyrics are written from the point of view of the drug itself, with Brown warning his congregation to stay away from the perilous drug.
