Rock music continued courting controversy in 1966 when John Lennon declared The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. An angry eruption ensued. He went on to express his approval of American draft dodgers. San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district gained more influence on music and pop culture through psychedelia. Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix emerged from this new trend. The Beatles' exploration of Eastern mysticism changed the sound of rock music. The Rolling Stones used the sitar this year on their explosive "Paint It Black". TV created "The Monkees". The Beach Boys raised the bar in rock music production with "Good Vibrations".
