For the first time, albums outsold singles. The market was healthy enough to attract impressive sales for both formats. In fact, the music industry announced $1 billion had been spent on records the year before! Rock music continued evolving as heavy metal gained popularity. Art rock spawned prog rock with the advent of groups such as Yes. The musical 'Hair' opened on Broadway.  An increasing number of musicians were being charged for drug-related offences. Soul music saw some landmark recordings from Marvin Gaye (both solo & with Tammi Terrell), Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. James Brown released his civil rights anthem "Say It Loud- I'm Black and I'm Proud". Jeannie C. Riley dropped country music a new classic song.
