EURO-POP
While the majority of musical genres that dominated the charts during the 1970s originated in America and Britain, Europe was carving out its own brand of popular music. European disco had its own electronic sound, mostly influenced by the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Cerrone and Harold Faltermeyer. The Euro-Pop style had its origins in the early 1970s with songs such as "Railroad Man" by Dutch act Shocking Blue and Blue Swede's remake of "Hooked On A Feeling".
The genre reached its zenith with the mega-success of Swedish group ABBA. All 4 members had enjoyed success as soloists and as members of other bands. Members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson crafted pop songs packed with hooks to ensure immediate appeal. Further exploration of the songs revealed clever arrangements and unique harmonies from Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad. After winning Eurovision in 1974, many acts followed their example but none achieved the same level of consistent quality or success. By 1976, ABBA had made its presence felt around the world.
The Swedish pop scene was transformed as a result of ABBA's immense popularity. Today, it is an epicentre of pop, spawning prolific songwriters and producers such as by Max Martin. ABBA were succeeded by other Swedish groups including Roxette, Alcazar and Ace Of Base.
