BEACH BOYS
The Beach Boys consisted of 3 brothers- Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson- cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. The Californian group formed in 1961. Decades later, they are still highly regarded for their complex harmonies and Brian Wilson's visionary musical ideas.
The quintet issued a single entitled "Surfin'" in 1961, billed as The Pendletones. It piqued the interest of Capitol Records. The label signed them up and renamed the group The Beach Boys.
Debut album 'Surfin' Safari' was released in 1962. Its title track peaked at #14 in the U.S.A. They released albums in quick succession, as Brian increasingly played a larger role as producer. "Surfin' USA" became the 1st of 3 Top 10 hits for the band in 1963. The following year, The Beach Boys scored its first #1 with "I Get Around".
Brian chose to concentrate on production and ceased touring with the group. "Help Me Rhonda" became a 2nd #1. The Beach Boys then raised the bar on some of the band's masterpieces: "California Girls", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" "Heroes And Villains", "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations". The latter gave the group its 3rd #1 single.
Spurred on by The Beatles' 'Rubber Soul' album, Brian helmed his group's magnum opus, 'Pet Sounds'. His obsessive tendencies and use of LSD increased tensions with the other group members. This affected the quality of the songs and the band struggled to maintain ts chart winning streak.
As The Beach Boys moved into the 1970s, the material proved to be inconsistent. There were however, promising moments such as the 'Sunflower' LP in 1970.
During a recording hiatus which saw the band focus on touring, Capitol released the 'Endless Summer' compilation album. The group had only had 1 previous #1 album, 'Beach Boys Concert' in 1964. The 1974 'best of' double album became its 2nd chart topper. This success re-invigorated the group. New material followed.
As the 1980s dawned, the group's future was in doubt as a divide expanded between the brothers and Love. Carl and Dennis both released solo albums and quit The Beach Boys. Brian was ejected from the band in 1982.
Dennis drowned in 1983 and the tragedy re-united the group. The best result was "Kokomo" from the 'Cocktail' film soundtrack, which reached #1 in America and Australia during 1988.
During this period, Brian was under the dubious influence of Dr Eugene Landy. The group continued touring. In 1998, Carl died of cancer. There were now 3 'Beach Boys' acts on tour: Brian's solo band, Love's official group and Jardine's Beach Boys Family.
Re-unions and litigation dominated the first decade of the new century. In 2012, an album of all new Beach Boys songs produced by Brian was issued. 'That's Why God Made the Radio' reached #3 on the US Album Chart.
