When Alan & Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics for "No Matter What Happens", they wanted the verses to not only fit within the context of the movie 'Yentl', but to mean something to anyone feeling like an outsider.
Michel Legrand composed the music. The Bergmans contributed the lyrics. In the film, the song is performed by the lead character at a turning point in the story. After concealing her true self, Yentl can no longer deny who she is. All the feelings she had kept bottled up cannot be suppressed any longer. "No Matter What Happens" is that decisive moment when the truth must be revealed.
The motion picture was released in 1983. Barbra Streisand, in her portrayal of Yentl, sings the song in a pivotal scene. Everything changes from that moment.
