American singer-songwriter Jim Croce unfortunately did not get to see his beautiful ballad "Time In A Bottle" reach #1. The self-penned moving track was recorded for his 1972 album 'You Don't Mess Around With Jim'. It sounded dissimilar from the other songs on the LP so the song was not considered for single release.
The song deals with a man who wishes he could have more time with his partner. Its lyrics gained greater resonance after September 20, 1973.
Croce was aged 30 when a privately chartered plane he was on board crashed into a tree. Croce and 5 other passengers died. The singer had planned to take a break from music at the conclusion of his tour in order to spend more time with his wife and young son.
A few weeks after the fatal crash, the poignant song was finally issued as a single. It topped the U.S. and Canadian charts. It became Croce's 2nd American chart topping single and his 1st posthumous #1.
