These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Green, Green Grass Of Home

Welsh singer Tom Jones released "Green, Green Grass Of Home" in November 1966. By December, the disc had flown to #1 in the UK, where it spent 7 weeks. It also topped the Australian chart. In America, the single peaked at #11.  It became the title track of Jones' 1967 album.

The Jones hit was a remake of a country- flavoured hit for Porter Wagoner. In 1965, he scored the first charting version of the song. It peaked at #4 on the US Country Chart.

The original version of "Green, Green Grass Of Home" was recorded by Johnny Darrell. The song is about a man on death row reminiscing about his home hours before execution. Darrell's version was also released in 1965.
