These songs are well known but you may not know about the
earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
Somebody To Love
Jefferson Airplane delivered one of the defining singles of the 1960s in the psychedelic-rock hit "Somebody To Love". That group featured Grace Slick. She had previously been a member of a band named The Great Society, which also included her brother-in-law Darby Slick.
The original version by The Great Society was entitled "Someone To Love". The track was penned by Darby Slick. When Grace Slick joined Jefferson Airplane around the time of the 'Surrealistic Pillow' album, she suggested the song to her new bandmates. The re-titled "Somebody To Love" became Jefferson Airplane's first hit single on the American Top 40, peaking at #5.
