100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1959

💥10 What’d I Say

Ray Charles

Head and shoulders shot of Ray Charles next to a microphone, his sunglasses reflecting his hands on piano keys and the shadow of the microphone cast on his faceDuring a performance, Ray Charles ran out of material. The crowd wanted more. He started to improvise. On that stage, Brother Ray fused elements of jazz, rhythm and blues with gospel to create a new soul style. The song was so long, the single version was issued over 2 sides of vinyl. Charles brings his spontaneous watershed concept to a sonic climax in Part 2, when The Raelettes kick in, helping Ray incorporate the “call and response” of the church into the secular. Part 2 also leaves no doubt that he had carnal intentions. Soul music would never be the same again.
