Yugoslavia had won the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1989. After the country crumbled into separate republics, various territories began competing in their own right. To date, Serbia is the only one to have achieved a win under its new status as an independent country.

The first Serbian entry to participate at Eurovision was the 2007 song “Molitva”. Performed in Serbian by Marija Šerifović, the country’s debut entry became an unlikely winner. As of 2021, this is one of the last 3 victorious entries not performed in English.

Belgrade played host city for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008 where, for the eighth consecutive year, a country took home the top prize for its first time (excluding the previous Yugoslav win).
