Portugal’s first appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest was in 1964. After waiting more than half a decade, a Portuguese entry finally succeeded in 2017. For decades, Portugal had been one of the worst performing participants. Salvador Sobral’s song changed his homeland’s fortunes.

“Amar pelos dois” was a significant winner. It was the first song sung with no English lyrics since 1998 to triumph. The entry also accumulated the highest score ever: a total of 758 points.

As a result of the Portuguese victory, Lisbon was selected as host city for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Countries with previous wins have secured the top prize since then: Israel, Netherlands and Italy.
