EUROVISION

1956-2022

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS

(in chronological order)

This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.

1975

After securing its first win in 1974, Sweden hosted the Eurovision Song Contest. France and Malta returned to the ESC. Greece withdrew. In total, 19 representatives arrived in Stockholm, including debuting nation Turkey.

The first group to win at Eurovision was directly followed by a second: Teach-In. This was the fourth victory for The Netherlands. The country shared the record for the most ESC wins with France and Luxembourg. It would be a long wait until 2019 for another Dutch entry to earn the top prize.

1976

The Hague hosted the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest. Eighteen countries took part, with Sweden, Malta and Turkey withdrawing and Greece and Austria returning. Corry Brokken, who had sung the winning Dutch entry back in 1957, hosted the show.

SAVE YOUR KISSES FOR ME

Brotherhood Of Man

United Kingdom

ABBA’s impact on Eurovision was still evident. In 1976, for the third consecutive year, a group snatched victory. Brotherhood Of Man’s “Save Your Kisses For Me” collected 164 points and went on to sell almost 6,000,000 copies. It was a major chart success, reaching #1 in Britain and in various European countries; #1 on the US Adult Contemporary Chart and #5 in Australia.

1977

Strike action delayed the Contest for a month, but this was only the first of the impediments experienced. London hosted Eurovision. Tunisia was scheduled to perform as the first African nation at the ESC. Before the air date, the country withdrew its song. Once again, the rule that entries must be performed in one of that country’s official languages. Exceptions were made for Belgium and Germany as their national selections had already begun. Both countries ended up represented by songs sung in English. Germany was represented by successful disco group Silver Convention and finished in eighth position.

L’OISEAU ET L’ENFANT

France took the lead for most wins with “L’Oiseau Et L’enfant” (The Bird & The Infant). This fifth victory is (to date) the last achieved by a French entry.
