PURPLE RAIN :
PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION
 Princepurplerain.jpg
 [1984]
The moment the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack opens with the spoken intro from "Let's Go Crazy", the listener knows an exciting ride beckons. The song is the perfect draw card, setting the mood for a celebration. Critics had been under Prince's spell ever since his debut album in 1978. He had gathered an ever increasing following with previous albums 'Controversy' and '1999'. In 1984, the world took notice of the many layers of brilliance in his work as well as its pop appeal. 'Purple Rain' is Prince at his very best. Each track is special, particularly "When Doves Cry" and the sublime "Purple Rain". There's the aural beauty of "Darling Nikki" and the fun funk of "Baby I'm A Star". There are echoes of Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone and Funkadelic in Prince's music, but the man creates his own unique blend. Highlight tracks: When Doves Cry; Purple Rain & Take Me With U.
