PICTURE BOOK: SIMPLY RED

 [1985]
Simply Red arrived in 1985 with a stunning debut album in 'Picture Book'. The band, led by Mick Hucknall and his blue-eyed soul vocal. The collection of songs here are drenched in American soul and there's a distinct jazz feel on tracks such as "Sad Old Red". It fits neatly alongside a Sade album, as ts male counterpart from the same era. There are delicious remakes, such as The Valentine Brothers' "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" and a lush interpretation of Talking Heads' "Heaven". The last few tracks are dispensable, but then this album also offers the soothing "Holding Back The Years" and the smooth funk of "Come To My Aid". Hucknall is the undeniable focal point, with a voice that he frequently demonstrates has a  power and range usually associated with seasoned African-American artists. Highlight tracks: Heaven; Holding Back The Years & Money's Too Tight (To Mention)".
