In 1995, ‘GoldenEye’ proved to be a success at the box office, with Pierce Brosnan comfortable in his new role as James Bond. The next film in the franchise was to be named ‘Tomorrow Never Lies’.

The movie’s title was changed to ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ and David Arnold was announced as the new composer to score the next instalment.

For the title song, the net was cast further than before, with an open invitation to interested parties. Among the acts that submitted songs were Pulp, Duran Duran (who had already sung “A View To A Kill”) and Marc Almond.

“Surrender (Tomorrow Never Dies)” was composed by Arnold with David McAlmont. The latter was initially to sing the song, but it was later decided that vocalist K.D. Lang would do the honours.

Had this plan gone ahead, the Canadian would have become the first openly gay performer of a Bond opening song. That claim would have to wait until Sam Smith recorded “The Writing’s On The Wall” in 2015’s ‘Spectre’.

At the last minute, the producers decided they wanted a more well known singer. Lang was out. Sheryl Crow was recruited to sing a new “Tomorrow Never Dies”.

Fortunately, Lang’s superior recording was not completely discarded. Re-titled simply “Surrender”, the song is heard over the film’s closing credits. Crow may have had a higher profile, but Lang's delivery is up there with the other unforgettable Bond classics.
