(1952-2022)

)

With more than 70 years on the throne, Elizabeth II ruled during decades of immense change. Here are songs that demonstrate how radically British popular music evolved throughout her reign. These selections- one for every year she ruled- reflect shifts in popular culture across the seven decades.

Despite her age, the Queen continued with her duties as monarch and Head of State for a number of nations. This dedication earned her respect, even from opponents to a monarchy. She continued to offer comfort during trying times, most recently while Britain was struggling with the Coronavirus pandemic.

She opened the 2012 London Olympics and had a memorable part in its Opening Ceremony opposite Daniel Craig portraying James Bond.

After 73 years of marriage, her husband Philip passed away in 2021. Recent years have seen a resurgence of scandals involving her son Andrew, grandson Harry and his wife Meghan Markle fouling the Royals’ image.

This period saw rising talent such as Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Adele break through and become global favourites. One Direction too, became one of the best-selling boy bands in history. Various members have enjoyed solo success, most notably Harry Styles.
