Curtis Mayfield was a major influence on R&B/ Soul. He passed away in 1999. In 2005, a tribute album was released with contributions recorded by Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Steve Winwood, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. Whitney’s track was a cover of the Mayfield-penned song recorded originally by Franklin for the first 'Sparkle’ movie soundtrack.
