QE II The 2nd Decade. Continues tomorrow.

Elizabeth II

The SOUNDTRACK To Her REIGN

(1952-2022)

)

With more than 70 years on the throne, Elizabeth II ruled during decades of immense change. Here are songs that demonstrate how radically British popular music evolved throughout her reign. These selections- one for every year she ruled- reflect shifts in popular culture across the seven decades.

Swinging London was at the helm of fashion and trends. The British Invasion, led by Merseybeat groups such as The Beatles and Gerry & The Pacemakers began to dominate the charts in Britain and far beyond its borders. Cliff Richard and his backing group The Shadows continued to score hits domestically.

It was hip to be British, thanks to films such as the James Bond franchise which began in 1962 and a new breed of musicians that included The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and The Yardbirds.

At the start of the 1970s, Britain pioneered the glam rock era with artists such as David Bowie and Marc Bolan.
