With more than 70 years on the throne, Elizabeth II ruled during decades of immense change. Here are songs that demonstrate how radically British popular music evolved throughout her reign. These selections- one for every year she ruled- reflect shifts in popular culture across the seven decades.

N 2002-2011 M

The year 2002 started with great grief for the Queen as she mourned the passing of her mother and sister. That same year also saw her marking her Golden Jubilee. The Prime Ministers during this decade of her reign were: Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron.

Support for the monarchy was revived. In 2011, her grandson William married Catherine Middleton.

Among the major British music acts charting worldwide were Coldplay, Steps and S Club 7. Amy Winehouse drew praise for her ‘Back To Black’ album, which also raised the profile of producer Mark Ronson. DJ/ producer/ performer Calvin Harris has created numerous dancefloor-fillers.
