EUROVISION

1956-2022

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS

(in chronological order)

This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.

2014

Denmark’s third victory at the Eurovision Song Contest saw Copenhagen once again host the event, where 37 countries competed. Poland and Portugal came back. Four countries withdrew because of budgetary constraints: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia and Serbia. The outcome of the 2014 Contest made headlines across the planet.

RISE LIKE A PHOENIX

Conchita Wurst

Austria

Austria had first won at Eurovision back in 1966. This was with a forgettable song. When the Austrian entry claimed the top prize in 2014, it was one of the most unforgettable moments in ESC history. Even countries where the Contest has little or no profile, Austria’s triumph was news. For some, Conchita Wurst’s win was a victory for the Rainbow communities. A bearded man wearing a dress received 290 points, a resounding result. To others, “Rise Like A Phoenix” was proof that Eurovision had been reduced to a LGBTIQ+ competition where gimmicks are rewarded. Countries such as Russia expressed their disgust. Nevertheless, Wurst’s song is one of the most famous entries in the history of Eurovision.

CALM AFTER THE STORM

The Common Linnets

Netherlands

The Common Linnets - Calm After the Storm.jpg“Calm After The Storm” was a country-flavoured song that was well received during the 2014 Grand Final. With its 238 points, the Dutch entry was that nation’s best achiever since 1975 when Teach-In took home the top prize.

MY SLOWIANIE- WE ARE SLAVIC

Donatan & Cleo

Poland

Donatan My Slowianie.jpgThe song may be ridiculous, but few who witnessed the stage presentation will forget the Polish entry. It featured models doing the laundry and churning butter. There was no subtlety in their movements. The song finished 14th in the Grand Final.
