This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.

2012

The Eurovision Song Contest was held in its furthest Eastern location when Baku played host city in 2012. As had been the case with Moscow, the ESC was not an easy fit for Azerbaijan. A total of 42 countries participated, with Montenegro returning but Armenia and Poland withdrawing.

Swedes had contributed to the writing of the 2011 winning song and 2 Swedes created the victorious entry for 2012. “Euphoria” was penned and produced by Peter Bostrōm and Thomas G:son. The former also co-wrote Norway’s entry, while the latter helped write Spain’s song. Loreen arrived in Baku as the favourite, but few would have foreseen just how successful she would be. “Euphoria” broke the record for the most “douze points” ever given to one song. A total of 18 countries gave it the maximum points. The song scooped up 372 points. This was Sweden’s fifth ESC win, placing it in equal second place with France, Luxembourg and United Kingdom.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK SONG

(OH OH – UH- OH OH)

Valentina Monetta

San Marino

TheSocialNetworkSong.jpgSan Marino debuted at Eurovision in 2008. For the first 4 years, the tiny republic failed to qualify for the Grand Final.

Valentina Monetta represented San Marino three years in a row. In 2012, she finished 14th in her semi-final. In 2013, her song “Crisalide (Vola)” was ranked 11th in her semi-final. She finally qualified in 2014 with “Maybe”. San Marino has only participated in 2 Grand Finals since.

Monetta’s first song required a re-write as it originally mentioned facebook, a breach of the Contest’s rules. “The Facebook Song” thus became “The Social Network Song”.
