#806 KNOCK ON WOOD Amii Stewart
Amy Stewart was born in Washington D.C. in 1956. As she actively started pursuing a career as a dancer, she changed her first name's spelling to Amii to avoid confusion with another Amy Stewart. Relocating to London, she met Barry Leng who ended up the producer of her international #1 "Knock on Wood". The single was a disco remake of Eddie Floyd's 1966 Stax single. Floyd co-wrote the song with Steve Cropper. The original peaked at #28 in the USA. Stewart's remake shot to #1 in America and Australia and peaked at #6 in Britain in 1979. For a follow-up, Stewart covered another rock classic: The Doors' "Light my Fire". While her next releases failed to maintain her success in most markets, the singer remained a fixture on the Italian Top 40 until 1988.
