#834 HUSH Russell Morris & The Rubes
Russell Morris has enjoyed success across decades and is one of the most respected veterans of the  Australian music scene. He has recorded some of the local industry's most enduring songs including "The Girl That I Love", "Sweet, Sweet Love" and "On the Wings of an Eagle". He is best remembered for the highly influential "The Real Thing", a #1 in his homeland in 1969 that raised the bar for production standards.
"Hush" started as a composition by country songwriter Joe South. The original version was released by Billy Joe Royal in 1967. In Australia, Russell Morris was in a band called Somebody's Image and they scored a hit with their remake that same year. The performer left the group and launched a solo career that continues to this day.
In the 80s, Morris had a new backing band, The Rubes. They re-recorded a new interpretation of the song which peaked at #35 in 1980. This version rocked out more than his 60s approach.
Sadly, South passed away in 2012, aged 72 from a heart attack. Surprisingly, Morris enjoyed his first Top 10 album on the Australian charts in 2013, entitled 'Sharkmouth'.
