ALADDIN SANE
DAVID BOWIE
(1973)
Brian Duffy shot the indelible image of Bowie with makeup featured on the cover of 'Aladdin Sane'. The glitter and lightning bolt reflected his Ziggy Stardust persona as well as the glam rock phenomenon of which Bowie was its greatest exponent. No doubt, at the time, this cover was radical. In the midst of tumultuous shifts in attitudes and a more liberal mood towards gender roles and sex, Bowie's look was revolutionary. Androgyny and men adorning makeup were innovative. The album cover demanded attention and helped further promote one of that era's most influential artists.
