BEFORE IT WAS A HIT XXVIII: That's What Friends Are For. Continues next week.

BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG
These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
That’s What Friends Are For
In late 1985, Dionne Warwick teamed up with music legends Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight to raise funds and awareness for A.I.D.S. This worthy cause benefitted greatly from the single's sales. It reached #1 in the US, Canada and Australia.
The song was penned by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. It was first recorded by Rod Stewart and included on the soundtrack album for the 1982 comedy film 'Night Shift'. His original failed to chart.
