DESTINY’S CHILD
During the 1990s, Destiny's Child amassed enough significant sales and hits for it to rank among the most significant girl groups; alongside The Supremes, TLC and Salt-N-Pepa.
The seeds of this dynamic act date back to 1990 when Beyoncé Knowles met LaTavia Roberson at an audition. The 2 Texan 9 year olds became friends and recruited the former's cousin Kelly Rowland. By 1993, LeToya Luckett had joined. This became the line-up that signed with Columbia 4 years later.
Destiny's Child contributed "Killing Time" to the 'Men In Black' film soundtrack. In 1998, the quartet issued its debut album. Lead single "No, No, No" went Top 5 in America and Britain. On the US R&B chart, it reached #1.
Sophomore album 'The Writing's On The Wall' fared better and contained the hit singles: "Bills, Bills, Bills", "Say My Name" (both US Pop & R&B chart #1s) and "Jumpin', Jumpin'" (US #3 for 5 weeks).
Around this time, Roberson and Luckett grew frustrated with manager Mathew Knowles (Beyoncé's father). To their dismay, the music video for "Say My Name" featured Beyoncé, Rowland and their replacements: Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. A lengthy period of litigation followed.
Another re-shuffle followed when just 5 months later, Franklin quit. Destiny's Child was now reduced to a trio. The group released "Independent Women, Pt. 1" for the film version of 'Charlie's Angels'. In 2000, the single topped charts in America, Britain, Brazil, Canada and New Zealand.
Beyoncé was clearly the trio's pivotal member by 'Survivor'. Unleashed in 2001, it became the group's 1st #1 album in both the US and UK. The title track peaked at #2 in America and was a British chart-topper. Follow-up single "Bootylicious" did the reverse. The group's remake of Samantha Sang's "Emotion" was yet another Top 10 smash.
A Christmas album and a remix project followed. In the meantime, Williams released her solo disc 'Heart To Yours'. Beyoncé ventured into movies, portraying Foxy Cleopatra in 'Goldmember'. She prepared to launch her solo career around the time of the release of the trio's 'Destiny Fulfilled'. In 2004, the album included 2 #3 hit singles: "Lose My Breath" and "Soldier".
'#1s', a compilation album, topped the US chart in 2005. Rowland issued a solo project. Beyoncé married Jay-Z in 2008 and established herself as one of the leading figures in music.
Destiny's Child re-united for the 2013 single "Nuclear". That same year, the trio provided the halftime entertainment at Super Bowl XLVII, which was watched by millions around the planet.
