BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…

These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Self Control

Laura Branigan enjoyed a string of hit singles during the 1980s, beginning with "Gloria". The American singer sourced some of her biggest successes from the Italian pop scene. The aforementioned "Gloria" and "Ti Amo" had been hits in Europe for Umberto Tozzi. In 1984, "Self Control" gave Branigan a #1 single in Europe, Canada and South Africa. The disc also made the Top 5 in America, Britain and Australia. 

A few months prior to Branigan's remake becoming a worldwide hit, the original version had charted. Italian singer Raf co-wrote "Self Control". His version of the song reached #1 in Italy and Switzerland.
