LED ZEPPELIN
Legendary English hard rock outfit Led Zeppelin came out of the ashes of The Yardbirds. By 1968, the New Yardbirds officially became Led Zepellin. The line-up consisted of lead singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham. The group signed with Atlantic Records in the USA for an advance that was unheard of at the time.
In early 1969, the band released its debut album. The self-titled LP went Top 10 in America and Britain. A follow-up was issued later that year. 'Led Zeppelin II' reached #1 in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and some European countries. This LP included a rare Led Zep single - "Whole Lotta Love" which was a major international hit.
The group's sound provided the foundations for hard rock and heavy metal. 1970's 'Led Zeppelin III' added British folk as an ingredient in the band's musical style and repeated the chart performance of its predecessor.
The following year saw the release of the group's 4th (and untitled) LP. In the US, it peaked at #2 and topped the British chart. This album featured the legendary "Stairway To Heaven". Despite its heavy radio play, it was not issued as a single. Led Zeppelin preferred being considered an albums act.
The band enriched its sound with elements of reggae and funk for 1973's 'Houses Of The Holy'; which climbed to #1 in America and the UK. The following year, Led Zeppelin launched its own label: Swan Song. 1975's 'Physical Graffiti' became another US & UK #1 album. In 1976, 'Presence' entered both the American & British charts at #1.
A live album and film entitled 'The Song Remains The Same' was unleashed later that year. It peaked at #2 in the US and went one better in Britain.
An American concert tour in 1977 was interrupted when Plant's young son Karac died. The band's future was in doubt until work began for the 1979 album 'In Through The Outdoor'. This became the group's 8th album to make #1 in Britain and the 6th to do so in America.
As the band began rehearsals for a US tour, tragedy struck again. In September 1980, Bonham was discovered after choking on his own vomit following a drinking binge. Led Zeppelin decided to split. The surviving members pursued solo ventures. Plant later reunited with Page in the group The Honeydrippers. Page formed The Firm.
Led Zeppelin re-united for 1985's Live Aid with Phil Collins and (ex- Chic) Tony Thompson filling in for Bonham. The former drummer's son Jason joined the group for another one-off reunion in 1988 to celebrate Atlantic's 25th anniversary concert. Live album 'How The West Was Won' was issued in 2003 and topped the US chart.
Page and Plant continued collaborating from time to time. Jason Bonham re-joined the 3 Led Zep members in 2007 at a concert to honour Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun.
Led Zeppelin is still held in high regard because of its significant influence on rock music, paving the way for heavy metal and arena rock. At the same time, the band's adventurous hybrid of genres enriched its sound. Its catalogue gave prominence to albums in a singles-dominated industry.
