 Its verses ponder why the lofty aspirations of humanity no longer seem to apply. The lyrics question how so-called civilized societies can ignore blights on society such as the Ku Klux Klan and the use of chemical weapons.
Written by some group members, Justin Timberlake, Printz Board, Michael Fratantuno and George Pajon Jr., the song instantly was adopted as a defining hip-hop song of social commentary.
