CAT’S IN THE CRADLE
“…As I hung up the phone,
it occurred to me,
he’d grown up just like me,
my boy was just like me...
Harry Chapin scored a US #1 hit with "Cat's In The Cradle" in 1974. The single also made the Top 10 in Canada and Australia. Ugly Kid Joe enjoyed success with a remake in 1993.
The idea behind the song was devised by his wife Sandy. When she gave birth to their son, Harry was on tour. He missed the birth. This inspired him to write the song.
In the first verse, the protagonist is too busy working to catch his son's first steps among other significant family moments. When the boy is 10, he asks his dad to teach him to throw. Again, work commitments prevent this. Years pass and now the roles are reversed. The father wants to spend time with his adult son. By the song's conclusion, the son has moved away. He has a new job and sick children and can't find time to visit his father.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
