These songs are well known but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.

Louie Louie

 

Countless groups have jammed along to "Louie Louie". The Kingsmen scored the first hit version of the song in 1963. They peaked at #2 for 6 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100. 

The song was written by Richard Berry. He recorded the original version with his group The Pharoahs back in 1957. It remains one of rock's most covered tracks.
