RAY CHARLES
RAY CHARLES

Ray Charles created soul music once he switched over to Atlantic Records. On the label, already established as the epicentre of R&B, he would construct a new fusion of the sacred and secular worlds. Charles' exploration began on the self titled album, his first on Atlantic. It has since been re-titled 'Hallelujah I Love Her So'.
The groundbreaking album includes some covers, but the bulk was penned by Charles. His unique approach to song craft and singing is still influential to this day. Charles' use of the call and response from the church is effective on "Ain't That Love".
Few artists live up to their reputation as a genius, but his gift is at its greatest on the tracks "Drown In My Own Tears", "Mess Around", "Hallelujah I Love Her So", "Come Back Baby", "A Fool For You" and "I've Got A Woman".
His ability to create a brand new hybrid out of sources such as jazz, rhythm and blues, pop, rock and gospel has established Charles as one of popular music's true legendary originators.
