THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME
It is perhaps fitting that ABBA's final recording is at #1 on this countdown. Cut in August 1982, at the time no one knew this would be the group's swan song. Close inspection reveals "The Day Before You Came" to be one of ABBA's greatest tracks. Bjorn's lyrics demonstrate how much his songwriting skill had evolved over the years. Agnetha delivers one of her most effective lead vocals, going through the mundane details of her day. Suddenly, everything has changed when she meets a man. Benny uses his GX-1 synthesizer to optimal effect. For the first time, no live drums are used, with a drum machine providing some of the minimal accompaniment. Issued as a single in late 1982, it will cease to be remembered as ABBA's final recording when 2 new songs update the group's catalogue at the end of 2018.
