These songs are well known but you may not know about the
earlier attempts to score a hit record with prior versions of the same song.
I Am A Rock
Simon & Garfunkel had already released a debut album in 1964 but it didn't attract much attention. This prompted Paul Simon to leave for the UK and try his luck as a soloist. He was soon noticed as an American folk singer there. Simon recorded an album which contained the original version of "I Am A Rock". This solo LP was only issued in Britain during 1965.
By the following year, Simon had re-united with Art Garfunkel and the duo recorded a second album. 'Sounds Of Silence' included a new version of "I Am A Rock". This time, the song enjoyed success, peaking at #3 in America and going Top 20 in the UK.
