100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1988

💥85 F*ck Tha Police

N.W.A.

The members of N.W.A. look down to the camera and Eazy-E points a gun to itA rap group named Niggaz With Attitude was always going to attract controversy. Better known now as N.W.A., its album ‘Straight Outta Compton’ introduced gangsta rap to a wider audience. With songs filled with misogynistic, vulgar and violent themes, it repelled many, but also appealed to white youths. It was too shocking for MTV or radio airplay, but still managed to reach #37 on Billboard’s US Album Chart, despite being largely ignored by these mediums. “Fuck Tha Police” dealt with the police targeting black youths in the streets. It pulls no punches; advocating violence against law enforcement officers. N.W.A. present the song as a trial against the Los Angeles Police Department. Dr. Dre is the judge. MC Wren, Ice Cube and Eazy-E are the prosecution. The song came to the attention of the F.B.I. Gangsta rap’s reach among white youths tapped into their rage. Songs such as “Fuck Tha Police” exposed the harsh realities of life in L.A. for African-Americans. Its message was grim and extreme, but then so was the society that inspired its creation.
