GREATEST LEAD SINGERS

5The Supremes singing on a soundstage

🎤Diana Ross

[The Supremes]

While some may scoff at placing Ross this high, no other girl group’s lead singer has had a career in music spanning 7 decades. She still records and tours today. It is also worth remembering that initially, all of the Supremes shared lead vocal duties before it was decided that Ross would have the spotlight for herself. She became a household name during a period in history when women were kept in the background; especially women of colour. In 1969, it was announced that Ross was quitting the group and launching a solo career. She secured a string of #1 singles in her own right that includes “Touch Me In The Morning”, “Endless Love”, “Upside Down” and “Chain Reaction” and ventured into movies, receiving a Best Actress Oscar nomination. She paved the way for the likes of Donna Summer, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé.
