100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

1994

💥94 All I Want For Christmas Is You

Mariah Carey

The background imagery is a pastel version of yellow, almost a beige color, with red letters that spell out the song's title.Since the arrival of rock and roll there have been some festive classics, many of which have grown into perennial favourites, including Band Aid's “Do They Know It's Christmas?", Wham’s “Last Christmas” and John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s “Happy X’mas (War Is Over)”. In 1994, Mariah Carey offered us a new Yuletide song: “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, co-written with Walter Afanasieff for her ‘Merry Christmas’ album. The disc contained a mix of holiday classics and original material. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is a tribute to the sound created by producer Phil Spector and the music of The Beach Boys. Its inclusion in the film ‘Love Actually’ (a Christmas tradition on TV) helps set it up for renewed popularity each year. Since its inception, the disc has topped charts in numerous countries, including Canada, Australia and across the European continent. Its success has only strengthened in recent years. The single reached #1 for the first time in the U.S.A. in 2019. After several chart runs in Britain, the disc finally occupied the top position in 2020. In Australia, where the single first peaked at #2 in 1994, it reached #1 in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Time will tell if the song will do it again in 2021 (it is back in the Top 10 at present). Few holiday hits are as ubiquitous as Carey’s smash, yet its popularity persists to this day.
